RODENTS

When we speak about rodents we will discuss Norway Rats as mice are less intelligent and less cautious and therefore easier to catch. The Norway Rat is the predominant rodent we face in New York, This is our ENEMY and a very formidable enemy. To combat and defeat the enemy, it is necessary to know them. Rats are highly intelligent and the most successful mammals, second only to humans. They have incredible survival instincts.

Characteristics of Rats

Adult Rats:

  • Can grow up to 18 inches long from nose to tail
  • Can weigh up to 4 pounds
  • Can jump 3 feet in any direction and fall up to 50 feet without injury.
  • They can run at 24 mph in short bursts
  • They can swim ½ a mile in open sea and tread water for 3 days – can dive underwater and hold their breath for long periods of time.
  • Their jaws can exert pressure of 24,000 PSI, and their teeth can gnaw through most steel and concrete.
  • They are neophobic and therefore do not like change to their environment, which means they are difficult to catch and kill.
  • They have a highly developed sense of smell, hearing, and touch to compensate for their poor eyesight beyond 3 – 4 feet.
  • Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter.
  • They are nocturnal creatures by nature, so if you see them in the daylight hours it is a sure sign that a SEVERE INFESTATION is present.
  • Rats communicate ultrasonically with each other. In fact, the female lets out a high frequency squeal to drive male rats away when the female does not want to mate.

Breeding Habits:

  • A single pair of rats can multiply more than 15,000 descendants in a year.
  • Litters of 6–12 rats are born 21-23 days after conception. Female rats spend nearly 100% of their life pregnant.
  • Young rats can reproduce at 3 months of age.
  • As a survival instinct, rats also increase their ability to multiply when their population is being killed off.

Diseases:

There are over 35 diseases associated with rats and mice. Some of these include:

  • Rabies
  • Rat Bite Fever
  • Hantavirus
