COCKROACHES:
There is a variety of species of cockroaches. The most commonly found cockroaches in food service establishments is the German Cockroach. Here are a few details about cockroaches which will give you an idea of how challenging these pests are.
- A cockroach can live almost a month without food and can live 2 weeks without water.
- They mature sexually at about 30 days before they begin reproducing. Females will hatch egg capsules that contain anywhere from 40 to 45 baby roaches about every 45 days, or 6 million in a single year. Some female cockroaches only mate once and stay pregnant their entire life.
- A cockroach can live for up to a week without its head! They can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes.
- Cockroaches can become immune to certain poisons, and it is therefore necessary to integrate and employ several methods when this occurs.
- Cockroaches are responsible for the transmission of diseases to humans such as food poisoning; dysentery; diarrhea; allergies and asthma.

THE AMERICAN COCKROACH AKA THE WATER BUG:
The American Cockroach also known as the Water Bug, is the largest of the domestic species of cockroaches in the United States. These cockroaches thrive in damp, dark areas like drains and sewers and live off of organic matter. Cleaning drains periodically will help control this species, and screening drains will prevent their entry into structures.
FLIES:
HOUSE, SEWER & DRAIN FLIES
There is a wide variety of species of flies. Whether it is a housefly, sewer fly, or drain fly, these pests are particularly problematic in that they have been known to carry the organisms of various diseases such as tapeworm, hookworm, roundworm, and pinworm, just to name a few. These pests pose a serious risk of contamination in FOOD SERVICE establishments and therefore must be controlled to avoid such contamination.
BED BUGS:
